夏日的嬷嬷茶 Summer Holiday

One of the magical movies from the magic years. Filmed at two of my favourite places, the streets and cafes of Malacca and the beaches of Redang Island.

The movie, 夏日的嬷嬷茶 Summer Holiday. Chinese title really translates as Summer’s MoreMore Tea (Movie female lead’s name is Summer, and the male lead, MoreMore Tea).

夏日的嬷嬷茶 Summer Holiday – Movie Trailer:

.
.
.
The (male) theme song of the movie.
[How to translate this song title and unique chinese turn of phrase? Bountiful Bouquet of Beautiful Breakers?]
浪花一朵朵:

.
.
.
The (female) theme song of the movie.
With scenes of the streets of Malacca, and of Summer/Sammi Cheng at the Malaccan artist Charles Cham’s orang-utan house and art gallery, and buying one of his T-shirts.
快乐不快乐 Happy or unhappy:

.
.
.
This scene of MoreMore Tea/Richie Jen willingly playing the fool and like a broken record, playing and singing the song 快乐不快乐 Happy or unhappy over and over again to a broken-hearted Sammi. Awww…

.
.
.
The happy beach party scene of Richie Jen and Ah Niu singing and serenading to their respective loves.

Sammi Cheng was absolutely gorgeous and glowing in this movie, but even then, I remember seeing the young teen model-turned-actress 王凯蒂 Katherine Wang for the first time and thinking she’s really pretty. And really thin. And spoke funny.
I think I saw her more recently in a drama series or something; she’s become older and even lovelier.

Guess I liked the movie then also because the male lead was supposed to be an acclaimed architect with a thriving NY practice who got on the cover of TIME magazine, but who spent four months of every year being a beach bum and running a beachfront inn. And the female lead was a once hotshot fund manager who lost her touch and ran into a string of losers – the tech stocks she was suckered into buying, the best friend and colleague who back-stabbed her, and a cheating boyfriend (with all three linked together, to her horror and dismay).

Sigh, have spent too many summers playing the fool and bumming on beaches all over Asia… Sadly, those happy times are behind me now.

快乐不快乐 没什么快不快乐
Happy or unhappy
Nothing to be happy or unhappy for

  1. The orginal and very funny MV of the male theme song, featuring the three singers, each very accomplished performers in their own right, Richie Jen, Guang Liang and Ah Niu:

  2. No D. I am originally from Sabah.

The movie and 浪花一朵朵 reminds me of my carefree days (newly single again around that time, 2001 I believe). Used to drive up to KL to see this girl who taught me to sing the song.

  3. Heh, I think I have a strange and unfinished fate/缘份 with Sabah. Till now, I have never been there, but came close on a few occasions. Twice, made preparations to go climb Mt. Kinabalu, one of the items on my To-Do list I thought I would check off pretty early and easily, but both times was forced to pull out last minute.

Was very close to someone who was from Sabah for a while. She also did the study in Spore for high school, then off to UK for college, and back to Spore for long-term work. Very determined and accomplished lady, both professionally and personally. Gifted pianist who was worship leader and music director of my church. She tried to get me to retake my music theory exams and play proper scales, while I wanted her to throw away her scores and improv. Was supposed to go back to KK with her and visit her family, but I guess both of us were still too apprehensive about a 姐弟恋 May-December romance; and I was really still scarcely out of my teens then. :P

  4. Older woman .. ooooooh … I like. Not now of course. 18-25 combo is completely different from 51-58 combo. You should have gone for it back then my friend.

  5. Haha…

    時光匆匆匆匆流走 也也也不回頭
    美女變成老太婆

    哎喲 那那那個時候 我我我我也也
    已經變成糟老頭

Time quick-quick-quick-quickly slips away, ne-ne-never to return
Beauties shall turn into old hags

Aiyoh, By-by-by that time, I-I-I-I too
Would have turned into a crusty old geezer

    Ahh…To all the girls we’ve loved before…
