Bobby McFerrin: The Power of the Pentatonic Scale

World Science Festival 2009: Bobby McFerrin Demonstrates the Power of the Pentatonic Scale

Fantastic.

And for a split second there, I thought he was about to trip into the opening of that ancient chinese tune, 將軍令/The General’s Command (very old music from the Tang-era; popular in it’s own right as passed-down imperial court music and folk music over the ages, but became even more popular and brought right into the modern pop era as the theme song of the Jet Li/Wong Fei Hung series of movies. The famous invigorating, very stirring chinamen-please-stand-up opening sequence and song of the 1991 movie, Wong Fei Hung/Once Upon a Time in China. Sung by George Lam. In Cantonese, and Mandarin.)

The pentatonic scale. Ancient and immense, resonating a pure tone which stirs deeply in every soul. Very useful as military drum-beats and commands to marshal and orchestrate entire armies with.

Powerful indeed.
